Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cells in the central nervous system (CNS). They undertake a wide range of homeostatic functions in the CNS, including buffering excess neurotransmitters, regulating synaptic and blood-brain barrier function, and supporting other cells resident in CNS. Whereas microglia serve as the cleaners and defenders of the brain, astrocytes ensure the brain runs quickly and efficiently.
