Not gonna lie the last quarter was brutal for cargo damage and I'm pretty sure our insurance provider is about to drop us if we file one more claim for shifted pallets. The whole thing has me looking at our container loading process and realizing we've been relying on scraps of timber and some very optimistic strapping that clearly isn't doing the job once the ship hits rough seas. I got a quote for those woven dunnage bags and the price per bag is reasonable enough but the supplier mentioned a dunnage bag inflator as an essential accessory and I'm trying to figure out if that's a genuine must have or just an upsell. Our guys are currently using a foot pump which probably takes forever and gives inconsistent pressure knowing how impatient they get by the end of a shift. For those of you who load containers regularly and actually care about what arrives at the other end, did switching to a proper inflator tool noticeably improve how well your bags hold or is it just a speed thing? I'll buy it if it means fewer headaches but I've been burned before buying tools that end up gathering dust in the corner.

Not just speed. With a foot pump nobody knows what pressure is actually in the bag, and underfilled bags are the classic reason pallets slide around in transit. A gauge on the inflator removes the guesswork. Did your supplier give you a rated fill pressure for the bags?

Rough quarter, but at least you've worked out where it's going wrong. Scrap timber and loose strapping just won't survive a long sea leg. Get proper bags in and keep the insurer happy.

We had the same problem on exports out of Jebel Ali and claims dropped noticeably once we filled bags properly. The inflator mostly fixed consistency, because the night crew stopped overfilling and popping them. Paid for itself after avoiding one claim.

Half upsell, half genuine need. A foot pump can't hold you inside the bag's rated pressure range, and overfilling can burst a bag or lean on the container doors. Match bag size to the void gap, and check the bags carry AAR certification for your load weight.

Before buying more gear, how big are the voids between pallets once the container is loaded? And does your insurer have any securing requirements on file? That might change what you need and could help with your next claim.
