Cool but not cold in extreme heat usually means low refrigerant, and low refrigerant means a leak somewhere. A top-up alone will only last a few weeks. Ask the shop to add UV dye or run a nitrogen leak test so the real source gets found.

My 2017 Explorer did this exact thing and it was a leaking condenser up front, which sits right in the path of road debris. Replaced it and regassed for a fair price at an independent, and the AC has been ice cold since. The dealer had quoted nearly double.

On the 2018 Explorer, the rear AC lines and the compressor clutch are common weak spots, so ask them to check clutch engagement and high and low side pressures, not only the gas level. Also look at the condenser fins for dust clogging, since that kills cooling in summer. A proper service pulls a vacuum first, then recharges by weight.

Does the air get warmer when you're stuck in traffic and cooler once you're moving? That would point toward a condenser fan or airflow issue rather than a refrigerant problem. And is it only the front vents, or is the rear AC weak too?
